Based on the recent guidelines established by the EEA, DESE, MIAA, NEC and Saugus Public Schools the following has been established for the Winter 2020-21 Season:
Saugus High School will offer the following teams for the Winter 2020-21 season (actual registrations and interest will determine the final team offerings and the number of participants per team may be limited this winter season due to COVID-19 safety regulations).

Junior Varsity Girls Basketball (8th graders eligible)
Varsity Boys Basketball
Junior Varsity Boys Basketball
Freshman Boys Basketball
Varsity Boys Ice Hockey (8th graders eligible)
Varsity Girls Ice Hockey (NEW co-op team with Medford, Malden & Revere)
Varsity Swimming CO-ED (co-op team with Northeast Metro Tech HS)
Indoor Track has been moved to the MIAA Fall 2 Season, with tentative season dates of 2/22/21- 4/23/21.
Wrestling and Winter Competitive Cheer have been tentatively moved to the spring season with tentative season dates of 4/26/21 – 7/3/21.
- MASKS ARE REQUIRED AS SPECIFIED BY MIAA SPORT SPECIFIC RULE MODIFICATIONS for all participants and coaches at ALL times during practices and games.
- Tryouts/practices for the winter season will begin Monday December 14th for all teams. More detailed tryout and practice schedules will be made available from our coaching staff after the Thanksgiving holiday break.
- The Winter 2020-21 online athletic registration process will begin Monday November 23rd and will end at the close of the day on Monday December 7th.
- Registration will be online through Final Forms, and will be available at: https://saugus-ma.finalforms.com/ All student-athletes interested in trying out for a winter sport must be registered by Monday December 7th. Due to strict health and safety guidelines, NO LATE REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER DECEMBER 7TH.
- All student-athletes participating in a winter sport must have an IN-PERSON PHYSICAL EXAM within the last 13 months on file with the athletic office. Despite the pandemic, the Massachusetts DPH will NOT accept physicals via Telehealth for fall sports participation. The updated physical exam must be emailed as soon as possible to mbertrand@saugus.k12.ma.us Please be aware that, if a student athlete's physical expires during the season, they will become immediately ineligible and will not be permitted to participate until an updated physical is on file in the Athletic Office. It is the responsibility of the student athlete and parent/guardian to provide this information to the Athletic Department prior to the expiration date.
- Saugus winter sports teams will participate in a 12-14 game interscholastic season.
- Saugus game schedule vs NEC opponents will be made public once final adjustments are made to the leagues original schedule
- Schedules will be made to the best of the league’s ability to have the following parameters for game days: Basketball games will be played on Tuesdays and Fridays Ice Hockey games will be played on Wednesdays and Saturdays and/or vacation weeks Co-ed Swimming will be offered as a co-op with Northeast Metro Tech High and is dependent on that host schools ability to hold a season. Please contact our athletic department for more information.
- Attendance at all practices and games will be strictly monitored for COVID-19 contact tracing purposes. Every participating student-athlete will be required to answer a COVID-19 self-screening questionnaire with their coach before the start of each practice and/or game during the 2020-21 Winter Season. For away games, individual self-certification will need to be completed prior to arrival at the contest venue.
- Saugus Public Schools will not be providing school-based transportation to any away games or matches. Families must provide transportation to practices during the week and on all contest dates including possible weekends, holidays and/or school vacation for their respective games.
- PER SAUGUS BOARD OF HEALTH MANDATE there will be no spectators allowed at any home indoor sporting contests during the 2020-21 winter season, this includes the sports of basketball, ice hockey and swimming. While we know that this is a significant disappointment to athletes and their families, we ask you to please understand that it is being done out of an abundance of caution by our local town authorities and with the health and safety of our student athletes in mind. We will be providing information regarding potential live streaming viewing option alternatives prior to the beginning of the game season.
- In an effort to remain in compliance with all Massachusetts State Laws relative to indoor gatherings, there will also be no visiting spectator attendance allowed at any NEC away game venues during the winter season. Attendance protocols will be strictly enforced in all locations
- Payment of user fee will be due by Friday January 4th for each student-athlete that is successfully rostered on a team following the tryout process.
